• Notes: Jess went to Fairdale Elementary School, and to DuPont Manual High School. He was in the Air Force from August 10, 1950 to September 11, 1951. He was stationed at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. While awaiting a school, he was assigned 90 day KP duty since he had cooking experience in his mother's restaurant. He showed promise so he was offered Buck Sargent rank with the opportunity to attend cooking school at the Washington Hotel in Dallas. He declined this offer and applied for Armorer's School. Jess was sent to Lowery AFB, Denver, Colorado, to bomber tail gunner's school which was supposed to last six weeks. While he was there, he got rheumatic fever and had to stay flat of his back for about six months. The fever left him disabled to the extent that he received a small pension.
  
  After discharge he worked at various places until 1957 when he went to American Synthetic Rubber Company where he was a lab technician until March, 1973. While he was working there, he and his mother started a restaurant in July, 1956 in Fairdale at 9208 National Turnpike. He worked in the restaurant off and on until may, 1967 when he bought a liquor store at 9413 Maple Road in Okolona. In March 1979 he moved down the road to 5930 Cooper Chapel Road and opened a convenience-type grocery and moved his liquor store into a building next door. He also owned Shirley's Coin Laundry for a while about 1970 in the same building.
