Effie Irene's nickname was Sis or Sissie. She grew up and went to school in Bogata, Texas. Irene met and married Athan Woods in Texas. Shortly after they married, they moved to California to join her sisters. She and Athan lived in Arboga and worked in the hops fields. After Jerry was born, then moved to Olivehurst, California. During World War II, Athan and J.L. Nelson (Irene's brother-in-law) worked in the shipyards of San Francisco. In 1945 Irene divorced Athan and bought a house
in Linda. She worked in Delmonte Cannery for a while, and later worked for the Almaden Prune Growing Association. When Irene turned 62 years old, she retired and became quite active in her church.
