George was Charles R. Churchman's father. Charles is the author of the book, "Churchmans of Kentucky". Charles wrote the following about his father:
In 1929 Dad and his brother Frank bought Whippet trucks and went in business selling Donaldson bakery goods. Their routes were in Frankfort, Kentucky. In 1929 Mother and Dad lived in Louisville, but moved to Frankfort in 1931, right after Jess was born.
By 1932 the Great Depression was in full bloom so Dad and Uncle Frank had to quit their Donaldson routes, and Dad worked at whatever he could find.
About 1935 Dad went to work for the L & N Railroad. In 1937 Dad was working nights at the railroad and farming days, and Mother was cooking in the school lunchroom.
Dad got home about midnight and took his tank truck to the distillery, where they sold the spent mash as slop for hog feed. He slept in his truck in the cold until they started loading in the morning because if you didn't get there early and get in line, you didn't get any slop.
They were trying hard to get back on their financial feet, but in 1937 Dad was hospitalized for several months and was unable to work for almost a year.
Mother worked in the school lunchroom when we were small, but during the war she was a Prudential Insurance agent. She was one of their top agents, but she had signed an agreement that she would give up her job when the boys returned from the war.
She started several restaurants after the war, one on Central between 3rd and 4th. She was also kitchen supervisor of several private clubs and night clubs. In 1956 she and Jess started a restaurant at 9208 National Turnpike, where she was until she retired.
Dad and Mother bought their last home from an estate sale. Although they were reasonable concerning the possibility of ghosts, both of them remarked several times that they thought the house was haunted. On occasion we discussed noises in the night that both of them had heard.
Mother's explanation was "What could you expect, when you bought a house from dead people."
