Alice worked as a housemaid in Louisville, Kentucky when she had Mary Louise. Mary Louise's father was Ray Patan according to her birth certificate. Alice married Lawrence Tulley at some time later.
Lawrence worked at government workcamps during the depression. Alice and Mary Louise lived in boarding rooms in Louisville, Kentucky, during this time. At the age of 15 Mary Louise was placed in a Catholic Orphanage because of Alice's drinking problems.
Alice seemed to drop out of sight for over 25 years until a hospital in Galisburg, Illinois, contacted Mary Louise in the 1950s to see if their "Jane Doe" was actually her mother, Alice. Their patient was Alice, but she was later transferred to another institution and died in the late 1950's or early 1960's.
