Philip, known as Phil, farmed the part of the original Churchman farm he inherited from his father. This land was bounded by Peachtree on the east, Taylor Blvd. on the west, Lehigh on the north, and just in from Bluegrass on the south. this boundary apparently included his sister Mary's tract, which he bought.
Phil's house was at about 1129 Lehigh on the site of the original Churchman homestead. Phil tore the 8-room log house down in 1909 and built a two story frame house on the same spot. While he was building this house, he rented a house on Bluegrass about second door from Taylor, and lived there six months.
Phil was born in the log house, as were all Phil's children down to William, who was born in the new house. When Lehigh was built in the early 1930's, to replace the Churchman lane, the street ran right through the living room of the house.
Frank Lloyd Churchman, Phil's cousin, said that Phil was the most generally happy man he ever knew. However, Frank told the this story about his cousin:
Phil bought a mule that had heaves or some other defect from Louis Mann. There was some discussion about it, and Louie came to Phil's house angry. Phil got his shotgun, and whatever the circumstances, the gun discharged and shot the back of Louie's Model T. In his haste to depart, Louis missed the drive and ran through the fence.
