Jake ran a saloon and lived above it at Brook and Burnett. This was a "high class place, with a lady's entrance at the side."
Jake served chili made from a secret recipe at his saloon.
After Jake died, Pearl bought a large house between 3rd and 4th on Brandeis Street.
In the early 1930's she was living there with her mother, her sister Ida, Ida's husband Harry, and her adopted nephew Floyd Rector. Several times
Pearl invited her nephews, George and Frank Churchman, and their families to her house for chili dinners (made according to Jake's secret recipe).
Pearl and Ida were apprenticed to a modiste, a fine dress maker.
