According to Amy Vineyard in "Grainger County, Tennessee and Its People 1796 - 1998": "After Green Berry died February 28, 1905, his son, Jim, was the one who took care of his mother and his younger brother and sisters and did the farming. No one enjoyed tilling the soil and raising animals any more than Jim did. He especially enjoyed raising goats. He had a jennie that he liked to ride in his later years. Their mother, Mary Etta, died December 17, 1924.
"Green Berry and Mary Etta managed to get by with the bare necessities. It would be nearly impossible for us, with the conveniences we have today, to relate to the way people lived back then."
