Charles Richard Churchman was the grandfather of Charles R. Churchman, author of "Churchmans of Kentucky". Here are several excepts from that book:
"If I had to describe Grandpa in one sentence, it would be "He never varied." If it was wrong yesterday, it's wrong today, and will be wrong tomorrow. I never heard of him taking advantage of or cheating anyone. He was not a wimp -- he simply treated fairly and expected to be treated fairly.
"Grandpa was the last of our family to speak the Elizabethan English of our Virginia forebears. He was about 5'7" tall, 140 lbs., and had blue eyes. Grandma was about 4'11", about 110 lbs., blue eyes, and hair that reached the floor. She leaned forward and brushed it in sections until she had reached the end, then rolled it in a bun.
"We moved to the farm when I was about five years old, so Grandpa had a big influence on me. Not a big talker, he said a lot in a few words. His observation of boys mixing work with play, "One boy is a boy, two boys are a half a boy, and three boys ain't airy a boy at all."
Grandpa never owned an alarm clock, because he could will himself to wake up whenever he wanted. During harvest season he would tell people what he needed loaded on the wagon to sell the next day at the haymarket, then go to bed. About 1 o'clock he would awaken, hook up his team to the wagon, and start for town in time to arrive at dawn.
The trip to market with a loaded wagon took a little more than two hours. The market was on Market Street at about Floyd.
