According to Godspeed history of Tennessee, Thomas G. Churchman, a farmer, was one of the earlier settlers of Dyer County, TN. He was educated in a log school house in the mountains of eastern Tennessee. He learned the carpentry trade from his father, James. In 1842 he married Miss Ruth Pickard of Obion County, TN. They had 8 children, only four surviving, John R. (of Texas), Margurette (wife of A. Haywood Carpenter of Arkansas), Henderson C. (of Texas) and Thomas B. (of Texas).
After marrying in 1842, he spent 2 years in Obion County, TN, then 6 years in Carroll County, TN. He moved to Dyer County, TN, in 1850 and owned a good farm in the Ninth District, four miles east of Newbern. He was a Democrat, a good citizen, and an honest man.
