John's granddaughter, Ruth Tharp Heaton, was told by her mother that John came through the Cumberland Gap when he was four years old in the summer of 1831. Several member of the wagon train came down with scarlet or typhoid fever and died on the way.
John was involved in nearly all of the major family business. He was executor of his father's estate, and was a participant in his father-in-law's. When a dispute arose over the boundaries of the original Churchman farm, he was the family court representative. He was appointed guardian of his minor siblings when his father died, and was guardian of his brother, Cyrus, minor children after Cyrus died.
John and his first wife, Ann, was originally buried in the Woody family cemetery on what was later known as Gahlinger Hill, located about a city block north of Bluegrass Avenue, on the west side of 4100 Taylor Blvd. The part of the hill bordering Taylor was excavated in the 1940's to build a shopping center, and in the early 1950's the city cut the rest of the hill down and built a housing project. The city bought lots in Rest Haven and Cave Hill Cemeteries and moved the family cemetery.
