Henry graduated from University of Virginia and Jefferson Medical College with a Doctorate of Medicine. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army from October 4, 1862 to July 14, 1864.
According to Pat Churchman, "Henry Jouette went north to medical school and had to serve during the Civil War for the Union side. When he returned home, he was run off by his father because of his Union service in the Civil War. Henry wrote some sad letters from New York, asking his brother for his portion of the inheritance because he was sick and didn't have much in the way of prospects." The fact that he was buried in Virginia shows that the family finally allowed his body to be brought home.
