According to the Goodspeed history of Tennessee, James' father, William, was of English descent and one of the pioneer settlers of Tennessee. James was educated at home and his trade was carpentry. James married Nancy Bradberry and had 13 children of which 5 lived. They moved from Jefferson County to Carroll County in 1835 and purchased 500 acres of land. In 1850 they moved to Dyer county and purchased 702 acres of land where Newbern now stands.
James was the first postmaster of Newbern. He and his daughter Lou were living with D.H. and Nancy (Churchman) Trout in the 1860 census in Dyer County, Tennessee.
